Common Causes of Water Damage in Roxbury Buildings

Water entering your Roxbury home causes immediate water damage. Any cleanup delay leads to secondary damage to contents and structure. Mold infestations may occur, carpets are soaked, and hardwood floors swell and buckle. Porous materials such as drywall and pressed wood products absorb moisture, swell and lose integrity causing permanent damage if cleanup is delayed.

SERVPRO provides water damage cleanup for homeowners in Roxbury. We respond in less than four hours from your call. We aim to minimize the initial and secondary damage from water leaks into your home.

Homeowners are surprised to learn they have water in their homes caused by storms in the area. Common causes of water in homes leading to water damage include water entering due to heavy rainstorms as well as other domestic situations:

  • Stormy conditions lead to roof leaks and broken windows allowing rainwater to enter the home.
  • Clogged rain gutters filled with leaves and debris causes water to back up under the shingles
  • Sewage backup caused by debris and backflow
  • Pipes bursting due to age
  • Leaking plumbing systems
  • Faulty appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers with moisture systems
  • Plugged toilets
  • AC systems malfunctioning
  • Water overflow in sinks and tubs

All of these conditions can lead to extensive damage to your home. Storms can introduce hundreds of gallons of water into your home in minutes. SERVPRO provides board-up services to cover windows and roof damage. We deploy high-capacity pumps to remove excess water. We use water extraction systems to remove water from carpets and hardwood flooring. Our high-capacity dehumidification and air movers quickly lower the humidity and dry your home.

We Do Storm Water Damage Restoration in Roxbury

Roxbury residents are no strangers to the extensive damage this region’s “perfect” storms can do to homes. Throughout the year, powerful coastal systems batter our area with strong winds and torrential rains. Half the year, these come in the form of hurricanes and tropical storms. Fortunately, SERVPRO offers Roxbury homeowners stormwater damage restoration services they can depend on. Our skilled water clean-up professionals can often remedy even the worst storm damage. These technicians routinely inspect homes, repair their ceiling leaks, and provide water removal services and water damage repairs. In performing these essential tasks, SERVPRO ensures that impacted residences are:

  • Effectively assessed for storm damage, so no issues are missed and allowed to develop into more serious and costly problems.
  • Expertly repaired so that leaks do not persist and promote foul odors, unsightly microbial growths, dry rot, or structural deterioration.
  • Thoroughly dried to help restore interiors, preserve household contents, and prevent further damage to affected materials.
  • Completely aerated and deodorized to return them to their pre-event livability.
  • Scientifically monitored throughout the remediation process to ensure that clean-up and restoration efforts have been successfully completed.

In the meantime, these are some ways you can help protect your home from suffering the worst weather-related issues:

  • Regularly check your roof and ceilings for any noticeable damage
  • Ensure that windows are in good condition, free of cracks, and well-sealed
  • Repair any problems found as soon as possible
  • Conscientiously inspect and maintain gutters and drainage networks
  • Keep trees around your house well-trimmed and your yard free of debris

Flood Damage Repair Solutions in Roxbury Attics

6/12/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO state of the art sign SERVPROO flood damage restoration technicians have the latest technology and equipment at their disposal. We are ready at a moment's notice.

We Provide Efficient Flood Damage Repairs

The attic is a location commonly damaged by the heavy storms Jamaica Plain and Roxbury communities endure throughout the year. Despite the sturdy construction of even historic properties in the region, roofs are not impervious to damage. We are ready to respond to flood damages and necessary repairs after threatening disasters.

Evaluating the Damage

Before any flood damage repair in Roxbury homes can begin, SERVPRO providers must understand the scope of the damage and decide on an appropriate series of solutions. Damage evaluation is the most suitable approach. Assessment allows our experienced production manager to closely inspect impacted structural elements and the surrounding attic space to see where controlled demolition, repairs, and full reconstruction might be needed. Factors that influence repair decisions include:

  • Contaminants
  • Structural integrity loss
  • Sagging materials
  • Roof damages

Removing Contaminated Structure

Contamination is not always a concern with storm damage to the roof, but SERVPRO specialists must evaluate the entire affected area to see if these threats could exist. We take no chances with potentially contaminated materials, so these must be entirely removed from the underlying studs.

Drying Framework and Roof Supports

Repairs are often needed after flood damage exposure, but it is the preferred option when drying can solve issues. SERVPRO always seeks to restore versus replace materials so we can deploy air movers to the impacted spaces while other repairs are getting underway to see what building elements we can preserve.

Repairing the Roof

Structural vulnerabilities are another concern, as more and more water can continue to penetrate the attic space without a resolution. Our licensed contractors work to provide temporary board up to get restoration underway initially but are also capable of repairing the roof fully once the remediation of water damage and flood loss effects have been overcome.

Flood damage repairs are a common element of the recovery from these disasters, and our SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain / Roxbury team is trained and licensed to help. Call us after disasters strike at (617) 466-6909.

Managing Flood Damage to Contents of Jamaica Plain Homes

SERVPRO logo Storm and flood damage restoration services should be handled by SERVPRO. We will be on-site within 4 hours of the initial call.

Content Cleaning Solutions After Flood Damage

To many homeowners, the contents of their property are as important as the structure itself. Then, it is critical to have suitable solutions after flood loss situations to manage the handling of these impacted items and work to restore them when possible. Multiple possible phases and actions can occur with personal belongings, furniture, clothing, and other contents. Some of these include:

  • Relocation
  • Cleaning
  • Off-Site Restoration

Relocating Contents When Possible

Flood damage in Jamaica Plain homes can be very noticeable when specialists of our SERVPRO team begin evaluating and cataloging the condition of the contents in the house. Because flood loss effects continue to migrate and move until containment gets established and much of the extraction occurs, it is important to relocate at-risk contents to safer areas of the residence.

On-Site Cleaning with Disinfectants

It is possible in some cases to perform on-site cleanup, but this must occur in one of two ways to be successful. The affected items must either exist in an area very mildly affected by intruding floodwater conditions, or contents must be relocated to an established staging area for cleaning and recovery. At the same time, restoration in the impacted rooms continues.

Off-Site Recovery at SERVPRO Warehouse

One of the more effective and direct solutions our specialists on the roster can provide is off-site cleaning at our SERVPRO facility. With the full measure of powerful recovery tools and products at the disposal of certified cleaning technicians, we can provide a wealth of services to restore contents to their original appearance and function. Some of these include:

  • Surface Cleaning
  • Drying
  • Disinfection
  • Deodorization

Managing the contents of a flood-damaged property is rarely as straightforward as homeowners might like. Still, our SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain / Roxbury team strives to choose the efficient recovery methods that suit the situation best. Give us a call now at (617) 466-6909.

Elements of Flood Damage Estimates for Roxbury Homes

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

rain pouring in through the roof from a storm Flood damage restoration is no easy task. SERVPRO has the manpower and equipment for ever job.

Factors Calculate Roxbury Flood Restoration Costs

One of the biggest concerns for homeowners after flooding and storm damage is who pays for the needed restoration. The answer is rarely straightforward, as there are vastly varying levels of coverage available from insurance providers in the area. We are a preferred insurance work vendor in storm, fire, and water damage scenarios, making us uniquely suited for meeting the criteria for claim approval.

Mitigating Water Damage

Flood damage in Roxbury homes can seem overwhelming initially, as there are often portions under several inches of water and ruined materials. Mitigation is one of the most vital services we offer to customers after a flood. Much of this effort precedes the claims approval process as this is essential to preventing the destruction of the house. This can include:

Relocating Exposed Contents

Personal belongings contribute to the final cost and estimated restoration time for recovery. When an estimation and projected plan of action is put together, data collected from the pre-job inspection is included, like the condition of affected contents. Relocation, on-site cleaning, and off-site restoration and recovery are all services possible by our professionals to protect what matters most.

Needed Drying of the Residence

Another factor that ultimately influences the cost and complexity of restoration after flooding is the need for thorough drying. Even without contamination concerns, flooding can impact hundreds of items and materials in a household. We have to ensure that the appropriate amount of air movers and dehumidifiers get used to finding an efficient balance between evaporation, sublimation, and condensation to dry a house effectively.

After a flood, you want to limit the out-of-pocket expenses to get your property back to its original condition as fast as possible. Our SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain / Roxbury team can help with detailed estimations and projected plans to secure claim approval. Call now at (617) 466-6909.

Dehumidifiers Help Dry Flood Damaged Roxbury Homes

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

Flood Damage in Roxbury? Call SERVPRO

One of the most significant obstacles to post-flood restoration and recovery in a household is removing trapped water in materials and moisture in the environment. Dehumidifiers play a substantial role in managing this moisture concern throughout the structure.

How Do Dehumidifiers Work?

The objective of dehumidifiers concerning flood damage for Roxbury properties is the removal of excess moisture that threatens the structure and contents within it. Dampness presents a significant threat to the property, so the placement of dehumidification equipment is essential to manage water in the environment and promote a faster and more complete drying process. Units work by pulling humidity into a chamber, and through the process of refrigeration or absorption, they convert moist air into physical water to discharge from the machine.

Low-Grain Refrigerant Units

These are a popular type of dehumidifier for restoration work as they do not require an excessive amount of power to perform. These work by cooling air to the point of condensation, which is then collected in a tray on the unit for disposal. Multiple refrigerant dehumidifiers can be used simultaneously to achieve greater production of moisture removal in an environment. This method can be especially effective to mitigate flood damaged interiors.

Desiccant Units

Desiccant units rely on absorption to achieve moisture management. The exhaust of these machines infuses the work area with warm, dry air to further promote a faster and more evenly distributed evaporation process. SERVPRO deploys trailer-mounted large desiccant units for Large Loss projects.

Seeking a Balance

It is important to note that conditions throughout the structure work to seek a balance during flood damage restoration and recovery. Several tools to regulate temperature and airflow throughout the impacted spaces to regulate these natural processes to benefit restoration. These include:

  • Air movers
  • Portable heaters
  • Containment equipment

After a flood damaging event, several tools are necessary for effective drying of the space. Water removal is critical to returning normal living conditions to the household. Our SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain / Roxbury team can help with effective mitigation. Give us a call today at (617) 466-6909.

Flood Damage Restoration in Jamaica Plain Basements

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Jamaica Plain Basements Require Several Extractors to Remove Flood Damage

If the basement area of your home becomes damaged by intruding floodwater, it is vital to have mitigative strategies in place to overcome these threats as they occur. Our fast response to these emergencies allows us to deploy effective extraction units to help.

Truck-Mount Extractors

Flood restoration of Jamaica Plain homes relies on powerful extraction units to remove standing water where it exists. In the lower levels of your household, natural floodwater often requires units strong enough to overcome the elevation necessary for the safe discharge of floodwater away from the property. Truck mount extractors can be used in conjunction with several attachments and extensions, including:

  • Squeegee wands
  • Light wands
  • Deep extraction

Submersible Pumps

Traditional electric submersible pumps are not as widely used in flooded basements because of the likelihood of solids and debris in the standing water. Instead, trash pumps and gas-powered units like these are interchanged. Despite being more powerful than plug-in units, the larger intake and discharge hoses allow easier management of potential debris.

Wet Vacuums

Basements are not always as accessible as restorers might like. To overcome this complicated space, portable extraction units that are lightweight and versatile are often the most widely used in these situations. The wet vacuum is the most helpful of these types of tools in our inventory. Several attachments can be used with these units, and they operate on widely available 110V outlets.

Removing water from the damaged areas is not always a simple and quick part of the restoration process. When sites like the basement become overwhelmed with flood damage, extractors must be capable of removing substantial volumes of water that also likely have solids and debris. Our SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain / Roxbury team has a fleet of vehicles stocked with necessary restoration equipment to help. Call now at (617) 466-6909.

The 4 Things That Often Cause Flooding | SERVPRO® of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

a street completely submerged in water and a flood warning sign in roadway Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury has the team to help you recover from any disastrous event.

Natural disasters of any type can be devastating. Whether you are dealing with tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms or something else, they can all be quite dangerous. However, most people are surprised to learn that flooding is the most common and the most deadly type of natural disaster within the United States.

There can be a lot of variation in the damage that flooding causes, but the types of flooding and the things that make it occur are often the same—and that is what we will be examining today.

3 Main Kinds of Flooding

Flash floods, as the name implies, occur rather rapidly. Typically caused by heavy rainfall, either from a large storm cell or a slow-moving one, flash floods occur when the ground is no longer able to absorb an adequate amount of water. Flash flooding can impact any area, and often the water will move swiftly enough to carry away objects such as dumpsters and cars in its path.

River floods happen when a riverbank cannot contain the water within the river—this is common after heavy rainfall or in the spring when snow begins to melt. River floods occur when the river overflows, flooding the surrounding area.

Coastal floods are similar in nature to river floods, but they occur in bodies of water along the coast. Typically due to hurricanes or other types of storm surges, coastal floods occur when water along the coast rises rapidly and overwhelms its borders.

4 Ways Flooding Often Occurs

Heavy rainfall. When storms dump a large amount of rain on an area, all types of flooding become likely. Flash floods are the most common type of flood, and they often occur in areas with large swaths of paved ground, such as cities and suburban areas. Heavy rainfall can also cause rivers or coastal waters to overfill.

Oceanic activity. The rise of ocean tides, due to rainfall, hurricanes or other storms, can lead to coastal flooding that impacts areas bordering the water.

Dams and levees failing. As seen in 2005 events surrounding Hurricane Katrina, the failure of a dam or levee is quite devastating. These structures are sometimes overwhelmed due to a high volume of water, and are thus prone to giving way and causing major destruction.

Snowmelts and ice dams. Throughout the winter, snow and ice can pile upon one another and lead to quite a bit of moisture buildup when warm weather finally comes along. This can lead to flooding on its own, but also cause ice jams, which can cause secondary flooding along riverbanks.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

What Will Spring Weather Bring? | SERVPRO® of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

an image with a cloudy, rainy, sunny and snowy sky Extreme temperature changes can lead to severe weather. SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury is here if you experience any damage.

The United States comes in at a close second as one of the largest countries with only Russia and Canada being larger!

Because our country is so large, that means that seasonal weather can look a lot different depending on where you are. With our nation being so spread out, it can create different weather patterns for certain areas, which in turn creates different weather threats.

As the spring season is drawing near, it means that the cold and warm air masses will collide, causing weather hazards. With the official start of spring on March 20 quickly approaching, let’s take some time to review the weather:

Let’s get started on our first region, the Pacific Northwest. This region will experience heavy rains during the spring months, which can cause flooding or water damage. The higher elevations also might have to worry with flooding, but from melting snow or ice, which clearly can cause problems of its own.

Moving to the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions, these ares are still experiencing winter weather. In fact, this region is likely to still be dealing with snowstorms or blizzards until late spring or early summer. We’re intimately acquainted with this weather pattern! While the arrival of spring might bring a little more warmth, we usually don’t fully warm up until summer.

As we move on to the West Coast, this region is experiencing opposite of what we see here. On the West Coast, they may be faced with excessive heat waves. When temperatures get intensely high and the air remains dry, it puts the area at risk of wildfires and also endangers people.

The middle part of the United States, from Iowa down to Texas, has drier air, but it’s very windy! This region has to prepare for windstorms, derechos and wildfires. Part of the Midwest is also home to what’s known as “Tornado Alley,” where tornadoes are incredibly common.

Last but certainly not least, we have the Southeast region, which can experience severe weather hazards during the spring. Intense thunderstorms and even tornadoes are common in the South this time of year, and states along the coast also have to keep an eye out for early-season hurricanes.

So, as you can see, with the United States being so large and spread out, weather patterns can look extremely different. That’s why you must always stay prepared and aware about what is going on in your area!

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

Heavy Rain And Its Effects

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

rain Flash flood can be an issue. Be sure you are prepared in the event of heavy rain.

The heavy rains that occurred in the Boston area caused not only flooding but also many sewage back- ups. The town & cities sewage system gets overwhelmed causing the sewage to flow into basements through toilets and sinks. When a storm drain suffers a partial or complete blockage, rain water gets trapped in the pipes and must go somewhere. Unfortunately, the only exit point is the pipe servicing your home that connects to the sewer line. With nowhere left to go it goes up through your pipe, pushing whatever refuse and filth it’s carrying into your basement and other areas of your home. Contact your local plumber to install a backwater valve to prevent this from happening to you! If your basement gets flooded or has sewage issues, please call SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury (617) 466-6909 to assist you.

Be Aware of Storms | SERVPRO® of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

large lightning strike in a dark stormy sky If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury is on the line, ready to make things right.

Summer is here! It brings warmer temperatures and longer days. Vacations that had been delayed are now being taken, and with all of this sunshine it’s a great time to get to the pool or the beach. However, watch out for those summertime thunderstorms.

If you think there are more thunderstorms in the summer, you would be correct. Conditions are ripe in the summer for thunderstorm formation.

All you need is moisture and warm air. We get moisture from the Atlantic and, well, the summer provides the warm air.

Stay Alert

Storms may be more common in summer but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take them less seriously. Storm alerts are issued for a reason so take notice.

Consider canceling or postponing outdoor events if bad weather is in the forecast.

Local meteorologists try to provide the most accurate forecasts possible. Get yourself an NOAA Weather radio if you think a power outage could happen.

Plan to stay home and off the roads if storms are in the forecast.

Consider tree maintenance to remove dead or low hanging limbs that could be susceptible to strong winds. Also, store outdoor lawn furniture in a secure location.

Unfortunately, with all of these precautions, people still die each year from storm-related weather. Don’t take storms for granted.

Be Safe As Summer Thunderstorms Pass Through

If lightning accompanies the rain, stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder you hear. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from the storm.

Stay away from windows, and don’t shower or bathe during a thunderstorm. Consider unplugging sensitive electronics.

Make sure you have an emergency kit prepared, and know the evacuation route for your area.

If flooding materializes, stay on high ground and avoid flood water if possible.

Don’t attempt to drive or walk through moving water, as it can easily knock a person off their feet. Flood waters can also conceal hidden road damage, and that could be catastrophic for you and people in your car.

There are any number of dangers that can come into play in a thunderstorm, and it’s always best to be cautious and put things on hold until storms safely pass. If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO is on the line, ready to make things right again.

Natural Disasters Happen - Be Prepared

8/12/2021 (Permalink)

large yellow diamond shape sign with Stormy Weather written in large black print Be prepared for stormy weather

When natural disasters occur most times we have little time to prepare. A common natural disaster that not only affects coastal property is a flood. Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.

A flood can be a result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges, and overflows of dams and other water systems. They can develop slowly or quickly – Flash floods can come with no warning. When there is a flash flood there is typically no warning or very little time between when the warning is given and the onset of the flood. Floods have been known to cause electrical outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings, and create landslides.

It is very important if you have been warned of a potential flood that you do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. It is very easy to drown during a flood - Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Be safe by evacuating if you are told to do so or moving to higher ground and/or level where possible. It is also recommended that you stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.

The best thing you can do is prepare yourself well in advance. Gather and store supplies in a safe place in case you have to leave immediately, or if services are cut off. Keep in mind each family members specific needs, including medication. Don’t forget the needs of pets either. Keep extra batteries and charging devices for phones and other critical equipment so they are functioning during the time of need.

Once the warning is over and the storm has passed assess any damages to your home or business. Your top priority is still safety! Call your insurance provider if there were any damages – for a flood it would typically be FEMA on a specialized flood policy. Call SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury for the remediation and reconstruction of your property – 617-466-6909.

A Look at the Types of Damage Associated With Thunderstorms | SERVPRO® of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

a large lighting strike just in front of person driving down road Thunderstorms can pop up at any moment. Contact SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury if you experience any damage.

Thunderstorms are quite a dangerous weather event, and though they occur frequently, it is important to not become immune to the threats that they pose. Every thunderstorm brings the potential for injury and damage along with it, and between hail, high winds, heavy rains and flooding potential, there are lots of issues that can be present each time a storm happens.

Every storm that contains thunder and lightning has the potential to be dangerous, as lightning strikes and heavy rain are major hazards. Additionally, a thunderstorm can become severe when winds over 58 miles per hour and hail over one inch are present, posing even more possible hazards to those in the path of the storm.

Various Ways That Thunderstorms Can Cause Damage

Damage and injury from lightning strikes. Every thunderstorm will also contain lightning, as thunder and lightning always go hand in hand. Lightning strikes are responsible for over 300 injuries each year, which does not include how often they cause structural fires or fell trees that cause additional damage.

Property damage due to hail. Though hail may seem like a minor occurrence compared to something like lightning, its damages can be quite far reaching. People without adequate shelter can receive injuries from hail, and it can also dent cars, cause damage to homes that lead to water entry and lead to leaking roofs. Large hail is extremely dangerous because of the sheer speed with which it can fall.

Harm from flash flooding. Though most people consider flooding something that is only likely to happen around bodies of water, with flash flooding, it can be a threat nearly anywhere. Flash flooding is often caused when rainfall is heavy and drainage systems or ditches get backed up, which can quickly lead to standing or flowing water. Flash floods are particularly dangerous because of their force, which can knock people over and carry cars away in its tide.

Thunderstorms are dangerous and can cause significant damage to homes or commercial spaces. If you have damage due to a thunderstorm, you can count on us to help. Contact us 247 617-466-6909 for more information about our storm restoration practices.

Heavy Rain & Back Ups

Storms can cause power outages that can span a couple of hours or even days. In the event your town or neighborhood is affected by a power outage here are a few tips to stay safe!

Before the storm:

  • Purchase a flash light that runs on batteries
  • have extra batteries available
  • Invest in a generator if possible or rent one if you know a major storm is coming.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electrical devices charged
  • Keep your vehicle gas tank full just in case!
  • Place a thermometer in your fridge and freezer so you can monitor the temperature during the storm
  • Buy food supplies that do not require refrigeration
  • Have a plan of where to go if the storm lasts more than 4 days. Community Centers are usually good places to go.

During the storm:

  • Disconnect appliances, equipment or electronics
  • Use a generator where possible to avoid the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning from running the oven for heat or electrical stove.
  • Keep freezer and refrigerators closed. Food will stay cold for about 3 days.
  • Stay connected with family or local news so you are up to date on the status of the storm. This will also let you know if evacuation is necessary.

After the storm if you notice damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury 617-466-6909 so we can help get you back to pre loss conditions.

Are you ready for the cold!

Preparing your home and business for the cold season

If you are a Boston resident or property owner you know that the winter is unpredictable. Some years we barely get snow and the temperatures are fairly mild. While other years it is frigid with howling winds and never ending snow storms.

No matter what kind of winter is in the cards for us this year, as a property owner you should be prepared. You should not wait until winter is upon us to prepare your property. The time is now, before the fall! During this time you should be making repairs and doing preventative maintenance.

Some areas to consider:

Gutters

Clean and repair the gutter before the temperature drops. Seal leaking caps and if you can add a gutter cover to prevent debris build up. Consider investing in a gutter heating cable. This will help prevent ice dams.

Windows and walk ways

Check your windows to make sure there are not any air leaks or excessive condensation build up. Most windows are believed to have a life cycle of 20yrs check your windows to ensure they are not at or nearing the end of their cycle. Check your walk way for any major cracks that will need to be repaired.  Pay attention to seams as well.

Boiler Room

Boilers should be serviced once a year by an engineer. The most important part of winterizing is ensuring buildings boiler will operate throughout the long winter. Ensure the pipes are well insulated as extreme cold weather can cause the boiler to shut off - which can result in frozen pipes.

HVAC

Check and replace air filters if necessary. Turn your system on to ensure it is functioning properly. Like a car idleness is not good. Run the heating unit a few weeks before temperatures start to drop to keep it working properly.

Water faucets and water lines

Drain outdoor water faucets and water lines to make sure there is no sitting water. If there is water in the water lines it can freeze in cold temperatures and cause damage to the water line and faucets.

Roof

Roofs typically have a 12 year life span. You can usually do a visual test of your roof to get a better idea of its current condition. Repair or replace any missing shingles. An added benefit of updating your roof is an insurance discount for newly replaced roof!

Fix crack in concrete and asphalt

Water is easily absorbed by concrete given the nature of the materials. If there are large cracks make sure you fill them in because salt during snowy season causes damage.

Be Prepared for Natural Disasters

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

severe weather ruffling waves in Boston harbor Always be prepared
